Vacation Rentals Need better Lighting?

Good lighting is essential

Believe it or Not, one of the most common suggestions that property managers and vacation home rental owners receive is that the lighting in a given area is not sufficient.  This only comes to “light” (sorry could not resist the pun) when darkness falls.  Even newly constructed vacation rental communities and homes have what guests refer to as the “dim zone”.

Take a minute to review the lighting in your rental home at night.  Even some large great rooms with newer recessed “can” lighting sometimes are really dark at night or the lights are not positioned properly above the furnished seating arrangements. Some builders put in really cheap low watt lights to suffice until the new owners take possession or maybe the home has 2 recessed lights when it really needs 6.

Many homes, new and old, will have bedrooms that have a ceiling fan light kit as the only source of light to a room.  While this is fine to find your way around, many travelers who are on vacation will be spending their valuable “down time” in the evenings reading a good book.  It is a good idea to have extra night stand lamps on both sides of the beds to provide better lighting.

You can also save time and money by having extra light bulbs in your vacation rental.  If you stock a few various light bulbs in the utility or laundry room this can save your visitors the trouble of having to call for help.  Many guests are happy to replace a bulb if it is handy – they just need light.

Halogen torchiere lamps can fix some of those “dead zone” spots for lighting problems.  These lamps allow for the visitor to adjust the amount of light from very low to really bright if needed.  Lastly, a simple yet nice gesture to your guests is to provide some type of glow or night lights in the bathrooms or hallways. Technically known as Electroluminescent (EL) nightlights that emit a green glow, they provide just enough soft light to help your guests that get up during the night in their new environment.
