Ovens are probably the most over looked item when it comes to turning and cleaning a vacation rental for your next arrivals. For some reason the oven is the last thing to get inspected. Todays ovens are not your mother’s ovens?
We have several vacation rentals and are proud to say that the appliances are updated and modern appliances. So when a visitor recently called to let us know that the oven needed to be cleaned, we thought we had the answer. Let’s get some oven cleaner from the store, spray it on, wait and then wipe off. Pretty easy, no problems. WRONG!
Today’s modern ovens are self cleaning. Remember most oven cleaners are not made for self cleaning and continuous cleaning ovens. The chemicals in these products can damage oven surfaces when exposed to extremely high heat. This means that you should not spray any degreaser or oven cleaner in these ovens as it actually ruins the enamel coating and cooking process. The next time you look at your oven you will see an option to start the self cleaning oven procedure. Typically this takes about 3-4 hours minimum. This is why your cleaning crew should check the oven first thing upon arrival and see if it needs to be cleaned. If it needs to be cleaned then set the self cleaning right away so it can be completed while someone is actually in the rental.
How it works - When you set the oven to self clean the oven locks the front door of the oven and then proceeds to heat up to extremely high temperatures and literally bakes off any food or grease. At the end of the self cleaning cycle you will find that there is virtually nothing left to wipe up unless the oven was really dirty and even then it can be wiped out with a wet sponge. In some ovens it is recommended that you take out all racks prior to initiating the self cleaning because the temperatures can get so high that it may damage the cooking racks.
If you have a self cleaning oven start the process early and avoid using the store bought foam cleaning chemicals - you may end up needing to replace the oven!
