It began in the early 1800s, and quickly became a very developed modern city. It served as an important connection between the east and west sides of the United States. Along these shores of Lake Michigan, skyscrapers and modern life were a way of life.

After the fire of 1871, which almost burned the city to the ground, Chicago thrived. Each decade afterwards the population doubled, and it reached two million around 1900. Most of the immigrants were from Ireland or eastern Europe. It became a place where jobs were easily found for all. Though it meant long hours and poor pay, many African Americans poured in to fill the city. The first time that black and white workers united for a cause in America was in 1894, the Pullman strike, due to poor working conditions. It’s clear that Chicago was always a step ahead.

Also famous in Chicago was its gang organizations. Names like Al Capone and Bugsy Moran are known for their gangster activity, a lot of backroom activity related to selling bootleg alcohol became popular. Now the traces of the hoodlum years are mostly seen portrayed in Hollywood movies. Contemporary Chicago has moved on. It beautiful architecture creates one of the most stunning skylines. The line of towers stand confidently and proudly. Tours by the Chicago Architecture Foundation offer a wide variety of tours on foot, bus or along the Chicago River. In other aspects Chicago is also well equipped. It offers a wide range of museums and galleries. The Adler Planetarium, located on Lake Shore Drive, overlooking Lake Michigan is a must see for star lovers. It is the first planetarium in the western hemisphere and houses over 35,000 square feet of exhibits. Ancient astronomical instruments, interactive adventures and models of the solar system will keep you busy for hours. For art lovers, the Art Institute of Chicago has one of the world’s greatest art collections. The wonderful exhibits presented make it a favorite spot for tourists to visit.

Chicago-ers find it difficult to part with their music. This is because of the superb array of well-developed music. From the live jazz and blues bands playing in clubs, bars and cafes to the modern rock scene that keeps the city trendy, Chicago has it all. The food is more reasonable than other major cities in the US, but it’s just as good, or better. The restaurants in Chicago are simply superb and the cultural activities keep it alive. You will never find yourself bored in Chicago.
